With the ExCel being the number one focus, a quick word about the other Irish Olympian in action today. Deirdre Ryan bowed out of the high jump with three misses at 1.90m, the same height that provided her season's best, having made clearances at 1.80 and 1.90. 2009 world medalist Ariane Friedrich was the biggest name not to reach the final.
Hey guys and welcome to our live blog as Katie Taylor goes in search of gold as she fights Russia's Sofya Ochigava in the Olympic women's boxing lightweight final. We are so excited here how are you guys feeling?
So guys where will you be cheering on Katie today?
@jimi Hey Jimi we can't carry the video feed for copyright issues but we will be putting up minute by minute updates here for you to keep in touch with it!
@jimi No problem least we can do for our wonder girl!
@JohnLambert Not long to go now John just over an hour to go!
Haha loving these ex-pats where are some of you home based fans watching from?
Some great crowd shots coming in now going to get them up for you guys so you can get a feel of what its like there!
In around an hour's time, Katie will have begun her bid for our first gold medal. And to be honest, I would be amazed if she doesn't win it. Not, as her opponent posited yesterday, because it'll be a fix, but because she's too good.
If you didn't hear, Ochigava had a right go yesterday. I'm presuming she's trying to get Katie to come out all guns blazing and maybe get sloppy. To be honest, I think if she came out all guns blazing, she'd win by more than in a cagey contest. But Ochigava has lost the cagey contests against Katie. As it happens, Bernard Dunne said, before Ochigava's comments were aired, that Pete Taylor should let his daughter off the leash. It would be a hellacious sight.
Watching Dressage at the moment. Don't judge me.
Got a photograph from a friend this morning from the arena. It was of the empty ring but I think the excitement of being in the ExCel had made him come over all funny. Perfectly understandable. Of course I'm jealous!
@Daragh Ó Conchúir Ochigava is a counter puncher anyway she needs Katie to sloppily come out at her to have any chance.
@Shaun Cronin That's why I think she is trying to goad her
Ok guys while I cut a few pics for you I'm looking for you headline suggestions if/when Katie wins? Best one may get used!
Sceitimíní is right, although I'm not terribly nervous. I can't see her being beaten.
Ok 40 minutes to go I'm with you all nerves are at me now!
@Daragh Ó Conchúir What did you make personally of the Russians comments?
@Shaun Cronin Well obviously they're laughable. The respect Katie is held in within the sport is huge. I mean Ochigava is quoted as saying that Ireland is wrecked financially because of all the judges that have been bribed for Katie! It's actually very strange, because they would have seemed to have had a very good relationship. She says she's going to land more punches and appeal. Rest assured, she won't be appealing.
