Heat 1 of the 5000m is under way with Fionnuala Britton wearing the green of Ireland. 10k champ, Dibaba is in teh same heat. Japanese and Italian gone well clear.
What an appropriate name for the triple jump... Leevan Sands.
Big British hope Philips Idowu had a very poor first jump. He has come in under an injury cloud and that wasn't hugely impressive.
And one more thing about the triple jump? What sort of warped mind came up with it?
Fionnuala Britton 9th with 600m to go in the 5000 heat
Tirunesh Dibaba in control in the current 5000m heat
Top 5 into the final. Britton beats Parker to the line, 9th potentially
It looks like 9th for Britton - might make it as a fastest loser
Actually, Parker pipped Britton on the line, looked the other way around. Britton given as 10th in 15:12.97, a personal best.
Dibaba won in 14:58.48, with Defar second and Kibiwot third.
A brilliant run by Britton, justifying her participation with a PB, 15:12 with a 10k in her legs a few days ago. She is some little fighter, sprinting up the straight.
Gavin Noble from Fermanagh is up next in the men's triathlon.
SNAP! Britain’s Phillips Idowu has failed to qualify for the men’s triple jump final.
Not much space between the competitors in the swimming part of the triathlon so far.
Second semi-final in the 5000m is really speeding up now, pushed by Burka.
The front nine are bunched together closely in the 5000m.
Places 6-11 in the second semi are faster than Fionnuala Britton's time
@Will Downing Has Fionnuala qualified?
Fionnuala Britton is 11th fastest loser
Britton misses out as she is 11th fastest loser
Gavin Noble has produced a brilliant start in the swim, in the leading pack in the swim. I wonder what his fitness levels are after his injury. Apparently, he hasn't been able to get as much running mileage as he would have liked because of the injury. He's good in the swim and cycling anyway. So hopefully he can give himself something to defend.
Hard luck for Fionnuala but nothing to be downhearted about. The 10k was a little disappointing but to come back from that to set a PB in 5k is brilliant.
@Daragh Ó Conchúir Do you think Gavin can put a stop to Team GB's medal hopes? Aren't the two Brownlee brothers ranked 1-2 in the world?
Varga, Gomez, Fabian, Brownlee J, Vasiliev and Brownlee A
Gavin out in 15th, 28 seconds behind, that's the shot Gavin Noble.
Now only 43km to cycle Gavin. Piece of cake.....
@Peter Towe The Brownlees are brothers indeed. Alistair is just back from an Achilles injury but is the best in the world. He is favourite for gold, with Jonathan expected to get silver. To be fair, Noble isn't considered a medal prospect but he's put himself in the mix.
